A breast prosthesis/breast form is worn by women who have undergone a mastectomy or a lumpectomy, or have asymmetry of breasts due to any reason. Losing a breast can lead to loss of confidence and self esteem in many women. A breast form can immediately restore your femininity and silhouette, without you having to undergo any more surgery.
No. With a proper fit, no one will be able to tell you are wearing a prosthesis. Silicone beast prosthesis feel soft and supple like the normal breast and offer a natural & smooth profile under clothing.
When properly fitted, a prosthesis will support your balance and posture. It helps prevent back and neck problems that can develop when a breast is removed.
You can be fitted with a silicone prosthesis 6-8 weeks after surgery. This time allows your surgical incision to heal and the swelling to go down.
It is a soft, light form that can be worn anytime after surgery, inside a loose fitting bra. It is made of soft foam, that will not rub or hurt the area of surgery while it heals.
Mastectomy bras are designed with ultra soft pockets to securely hold your breast form in place to prevent it from falling out. You feel safe and carefree while doing physical activity, when it is secured in place.The pockets also keep the back of the breast form from making direct contact with the breast form, which may irritate it in some ladies.
Most companies give a 2 year warranty, but with proper care, a silicone breast prosthesis can last much longer.
Yes, BC Pharmacare covers one breast prosthesis every 2 years. It covers a maximum of $450 for mastectomy, and $350 for a lumpectomy.
Most insurance companies also cover them, depending upon your plan. It's always good to call your insurance provider and ask your coverage before going for a fitting, so that you know how much you want to spend.

Mastectomy bras are not covered by Pharmacare, but most private insurance providers cover
them. Talk to your insurance provider to know your coverage.
Special prosthesis are available for swimming and water activities, that dry up quickly, and flatten when you lie down, just like your normal breast. They are made with a material that does not get damaged by chlorine in the pool water.
Mastectomy swimwear has pockets on both sides, to securely hold the prosthesis in place, so that you can swim and enjoy your activities without worry of it falling out. Mastectomy swimwear combines high-tech quality fabrics with beautiful contemporary designs and innovative flattering cuts.
You can wash your Silicone breast prosthesis with a mild detergent and water, and pat it dry
with a soft towel. Keep it away from sharp objects and from your pets (Pets like to chew on them!). ' Contact' breast form has to be cleaned every night with a soft cleaner to maintain its adhesiveness.
It is recommended that you remove it at night and store it in the box, to retain it's shape. You can wear a soft foam or leisure form at night.
