Compression Bras

Compression bras are seamless post-op bras that are specially designed for women who have recently had breast surgery. They support wound healing by immobilizing and stabilizing the operated breast. Sensitive skin and developing scar tissue are protected and post-operative oedema and pain can be reduced. All of our post-op bras have front closures and front fastening straps to ensure easy dressing.

compression zones

Specially stitched areas apply targeted pressure, encouraging lymphatic drainage and minimising the risk of postoperative oedema. They have varying pressure levels for use after different surgical methods to suit the patient’s individual needs and requirements.

Compression Bra FAQs

How do compression bras work?
They apply controlled, even pressure to the chest and torso. This external pressure: supports tissue and helps reduce swelling by limiting fluid buildup; improves contour and shape, which can aid in comfort and mobility; provides gentle support during healing after surgery or radiation; encourages lymphatic flow in certain cases of lymphedema, when used as directed by a clinician.

When should you wear a compression bra?
Typical scenarios include: Immediately after breast surgery (as advised by your surgeon). They are hygienically packed and ready to be worn right in the OR, immediately after the surgery; during the initial healing period when swelling and bruising are present; throughout lymphedema management as recommended by your therapist; during physical activity or movement when extra support is needed; as part of ongoing post-recovery care to maintain shape and comfort.

What is the best compression bra for after breast surgery?
The ideal choice depends on your body and recovery plan. Look for: moderate to firm, medical-grade compression (as prescribed); a style with front closure for easy wearing during recovery; adjustable features (straps, bands) to accommodate swelling changes; a breathable fabric that minimizes irritation and supports comfort; a proper band width and cup shape to avoid pressure on incisions. We recommend consulting your surgeon or lymphedema specialist for a specific recommendation.

How long should you wear a compression bra for lymphedema?
Duration varies by individual and treatment plan. Some people wear compression bras for several hours a day, while others may wear them more or less. Your clinician will specify the recommended hours per day, appropriate compression level, and review progress during follow-up visits. If you experience skin irritation, numbness, or increased pain, contact your healthcare provider.

Can I sleep in a compression bra?
Sleeping in a compression bra is not universally recommended. Some people sleep in light, high-comfort compression or in a non-restrictive sleep bra, especially if instructed by a clinician. If you are following a post-operative or lymphedema protocol, confirm with your surgeon or therapist whether overnight wear is advised and what level of compression is appropriate.

How do you care for a compression bra?
Care guidelines typically include: hand wash or delicate cycle in cold water with mild detergent; do not use bleach or fabric softeners; avoid dryer heat—air dry flat away from direct heat; rinse thoroughly to remove all detergent; inspect for wear and elasticity loss; replace when compression feels less effective or fabric shows wear; store flat or neatly to maintain shape. Avoid ironing or dry cleaning unless the care label allows. Note: Always follow the specific care label on your garment, as fabric blends and compression fabrics vary.

Are there different levels of compression bras?
Yes. Compression levels are typically described as: light (mild) compression, moderate compression, high compression. The level you need depends on your medical guidance, swelling, tissue sensitivity, and activity level. We clearly label each product with its compression level and recommended use to help you choose the right option.

What should I look for when choosing a compression bra?
Key factors: correct compression level as prescribed or advised by your clinician; comfortable, breathable fabric with a moisture-wicking finish; proper fit: snug but not overly tight; supportive underband that sits comfortably under the bust; front or easy-access closure if you’re recovering from surgery; seam placement that minimizes irritation over incision sites; durable elasticity and reinforced stitching for long wear.

How do I determine my size for a compression bra?
Start with your current chest/bust measurement and band size, noting any swelling or changes due to treatment. If you’re between sizes, consider a style with adjustable closures or a forgiving cut. For post-surgical recovery, your healthcare provider may also give you size guidance. Inner Beauty Mastectomy Wear offers in-person or virtual meetings to get your correct sizing and fit, so you can choose the perfect ones for your body.

How long after surgery should I wear a compression bra each day?
This varies by surgeon’s protocol. Some patients wear compression for several weeks, others longer during the healing phase. Always follow your surgeon’s or oncology team’s instructions. If you’re unsure, contact our support team for guidance and product recommendations that align with your recovery plan.

Do compression bras come in mastectomy-friendly designs?
Yes. We offer mastectomy-friendly compression bras with features like bilateral pockets, front closures, soft fabrics, smooth seams, and comfortable underbands designed to minimize irritation and accommodate post-surgical shaping and dressing.

Can I wear a compression bra if I have an allergy or sensitive skin?
We use skin-friendly fabrics and finishes, but sensitivity varies. Look for products labeled as hypoallergenic or with breathable, moisture-wicking materials. If you have known sensitivities, review fabric content and care instructions, and consult your clinician if you’re uncertain.

How long do compression bras typically last?
Longevity depends on wear frequency, wash routine, and fabric quality. With proper care, many compression bras retain their shape and supportive properties for several months to a year. Replace if elasticity declines, stitching frays, or compression feels reduced.

Additional Tips

  • If you’re new to compression wear, start with shorter wear times and gradually increase as advised by your clinician.

  • Keep a log of how you feel in different compression levels and styles to help guide future purchases.

  • Combine compression wear with gentle skincare and barrier creams if skin becomes irritated, following medical guidance.

  • We measure you and determine your size at a home visit or over a video call. We also inform you about the various models and compression levels available, and help you choose the right one according to your requirements, price considerations and insurance coverage.

  • Compression bras are covered by most private insurances but not by BC Pharmacare.
